3. CHURCH OF ST. ANDREW, ONSOUTONG, KANGHWA.

(The photograph shows a small part of the Church only; the pillars are of wood, in the usual Corean style, in which the Church is built. On the right is seen a part of the curtain which separates the sexes. In this Church the women are so much stronger than the men that the curtain cannot be hung in the middle line of the Church as is the general rule, and the picture is taken from the women’s side. The decorations are painted on the wooden beams. The Chinese characters on the panels of the Altar are “Holy, Holy, Holy.”)
4. A REMNANT OF OLD COREA.
(This photograph illustrates an old custom - at the same time gives some evidence of the severity of a Corean winter. The straw mound is a dead body laid out in the path until such time as it can be buried conveniently. The excuse is made that the ground is too hard, but the question of a lucky day also comes in. Corpses in Corea are rolled up in straw mats, and carried on rough stretchers made of poles. A portion of one of the poles can be seen poking out at the side of the temporary thatch with which the whole has been covered. This particular body illustrates also one of the difficulties with which the Church has to content; for the man was a Christian, but his family did not follow him and it becomes impossible to give him Christian burial without their consent, which in this case is not to be obtained, and they are awaiting the day on which they may perform the ceremony propitiously with the full heathen rites.)
