세계인의 무술, 태권도


- 독일 가르미슈
뮌헨에서 자동차로 1시간반 거리에 있는 독일의 휴양도시, 가르미슈.
독일 최고봉인 해발 2600미터 추크슈비쯔 산과 아이브 호수로 유명한 곳이다.
1936년 동계 올림픽이 열렸던 이곳 가르미슈 아이스스타디움에서
2003년 세계태권도 선수권대회가 열렸다.

- 태권도 경기
1973년 첫 대회 이후 16번째를 맞는 대회에는
모두 105개국에서 선수와 임원 참석했다.
챔피언이 되기 위해서 선수들은 7,8회의 시합에서  모두 이겨야만 한다.
당일 컨디션도 큰 변수로 작용한다.
한국은 태권도 종주국답게 지금까지 단한번도 종합 우승을 내놓은 적이 없다. 
하지만 이란 미국 독일 스페인 중국 대만 등 유럽과
동남아 국가 선수들의 실력도 만만치 않다.
경기 태권도 기술은 이미 세계적으로 평준화됐다.
40년 전 한국의 태권도 시범단이 바로 이곳 가르미슈를 방문했을 때만해도
상상도 못했던 일이다.

- 권재화 사범 다큐멘터리
1965년, 제1차 태권도시범단으로 이곳을 방문해 유럽을 놀라게 한 권재화 사범.
당시 독일에서는 가라테와 유도가 큰 인기를 얻고 있을 때였다.
다른 선수들이 발차기의 명수였다면 권재화는 안쪽 손날을 이용한 격파의 명수였다.
독일의 한 방송사가 BMW 성능 실험실을 빌려
그의 격파 시범을 자세히 촬영할 정도로 그는 놀라운 파괴력을 보여주었다.
이듬해 권재화는 뮌헨 비드마이어 무도학교 초청으로 독일에 건너와
유럽에 태권도를 보급하기 시작한다.
그렇게해서 지금까지 길러낸 제자가 만여명에 이른다.
권재화 사범은 유럽 태권도의 대부로 존경받고 있다.

- 뉴욕 맨하탄
세계 금융의 중심지, 뉴욕 맨해튼.
세계 각국의 거물들이 몰려 있고 작은 사무실 하나도 20억원을 웃도는 곳이다.
이곳 13번가에 권재화 사범의 태권도 도장이 있다.

권재화 사범이 유럽에서 미국으로 건너온 것은 1973년 무렵이었다.
유럽내 기반도 어느 정도 잡혔고, 더 넓은 대륙에 태권도를 알리기 위해서였다.
그동안 미국에 연 도장은 60여개에 이른다.
권재화 사범이 굳이 이곳 맨해튼에 도장을 연 것은 태권도인으로서 그의 자존심 때문이었다.

(태권도장을 세계에서 제일 좋은 도장으로 만들고 싶다.
그게 무도인으로서 제일 자랑스러운 것이고 내가 하고 싶은 것입니다.
그래서 이 도장을 만든 것입니다.)

수련생들 대부분이 맨해튼에서 일하는 금융전문가와 변호사 등 인텔리 계층이다. 
이들은 권재화 사범을 그랜드 매스터로 존경한다.

(수련을 통해 나는 집중력을 키울 수 있었고
보다 차분하고 조직적으로 일을 할 수 있었다.
나에게는 존재의 방식, 삶의 방식 그 자체라고 할 수 있다.

삶이 훨씬 단순해졌다. 더 집중력이 생기고 마음의 수양을 쌓게 됐다. 더 행복해졌다.
 
여기는 서로 경쟁하는 분위기가 아니다. 싸움이나 시합보다는 개인적인 수련에 집중한다. )

- 도장 기념물들
요즘도 권재화 사범은 일년에 미국과 유럽을 50여차례 오간다.
태권도를 더 널리 알리고 발전시키기 위한 정열은 67세의 나이에도 그칠 줄을 모른다.

(해외에서의 외로움 속에서 태권도를 알릴 때에 제일 먼저 생각한 것은…
제일 중요한 건 무도인으로서 겸손함이라든지 동양인으로서 특이한 예의를 갖춘다든가 하는거…
그런데서 무도인들이 현지 사람들보다 우수하다는 것을 보여 주는거...)


- 이준구 사범 자료 화면
유럽에 권재화 사범이 있었다면 미국에는 이준구 사범이 있었다.
1954년 미국으로 건너간 그는 아인슈타인, 키신저, 올브라이트 등과 함께
‘유명한 이민자 200명’에 선정된 유일한 한국인이다.
지난 40년간 미의회 상하의원들에게 태권도를 가르쳐왔다.

(의원들을 가르칠 때 무료로 했다...    
학생들은 검은 띠 따려면 모범생이 돼야한다고 강조했다...
이제 의원들이 수업료를 왜 받지 않습니까? 그러면...
언론에 인터뷰할때 태권도가 건강에 좋고 규범에 좋다는 말 많이 해달라고...
그게 바로 나한테 수업료를 내는 겁니다...하여튼 될 수 있는 대로
아동들 규범 교육에 좋고 내 건강에 좋다는 것을 많이 얘기하시면 감사하겠습니다
그래서 이 태권도 이미지가 올라간 겁니다)

세계인의 무술로 자리잡은 태권도.
이런 태권도의 위상은 치열한 자기와의 싸움에서 이긴 결과다.

- Garmisch in Germany
Garmisch, a German resort town located an hour and a half by car from Munich.
It is famous for the Zugspitze mountain at 2600 meters above sea level, the highest mountain in Germany, and Lake Ive.
The 2003 World Taekwondo Championships were held at the Garmisch Ice Stadium, where the 1936 Winter Olympics were held.

- Taekwondo match
Athletes and officials from 105 countries participated in
the 16th event since the first event in 1973.
To become a champion, players must win all 7 or 8 matches.
The condition of the day also acts as a big variable.
As the master country of Taekwondo, Korea has never lost an overall championship.
However, the skills of players from European and Southeast Asian countries
such as Iran, USA, Germany, Spain, China, Taiwan, etc. are not formidable.
Sports taekwondo skills have already been standardized worldwide.
It was unimaginable when a Korean Taekwondo demonstration team visited Garmisch 40 years ago.

- Kwon Jae-hwa's documentary material
In 1965, Master Kwon Jae-hwa surprised Europe by visiting this place as the 1st Taekwondo Demonstration Team.
At that time, Karate and Judo were very popular in Germany.
If the other players were the masters of kicks, Jae-Hwa Kwon was the master of breaking using the inner hand blade.
He showed such amazing destructive power that a German broadcaster rented a BMW performance lab
and filmed his destruction demonstration in detail.
The following year, Jae-Hwa Kwon came to Germany at the invitation of the Weidmeier Martial Arts School in Munich
and started distributing Taekwondo to Europe.
In that way, the number of disciples he has raised so far has reached ten thousand.
Master Kwon Jae-hwa is respected as the godfather of European Taekwondo.

- Manhattan Street, New York
The financial center of the world, Manhattan, New York.
There are large numbers of people from all over the world, and even a small office is worth more than 2 billion won.
There is a Taekwondo dojo by Master Kwon Jae-hwa on 13th Street.

It was around 1973 that Master Kwon Jae-hwa came to the United States from Europe.
It was to promote Taekwondo to a wider continent and to have a certain foundation in Europe.
So far, more than 60 dojos have been opened in the United States.
Master Kwon Jae-hwa dared to open a dojo here in Manhattan because of his pride as a Taekwondo practitioner.

That's what I'm most proud of as a martial artist and that's what I want to do.
That's why I made this dojo.)

Most of the trainees are intelligent people such as financial experts and lawyers working in Manhattan.
They respect Master Kwon Jae-hwa as the Grand Master.

(Through the practice, I was able to improve my concentration and work more calmly and systematically. For me, it is a way of being, a way of life itself.

Life has become much simpler. I became more focused and cultivated mental discipline. became happier.
 
There is no competition here. Focus on personal training rather than fighting or competition.)

Even today, Master Kwon Jae-hwa travels between the US and Europe about 50 times a year.
His passion for promoting and developing Taekwondo does not stop even at the age of 67.

The most important thing is to be humble as a martial artist or to have unusual manners as an Asian...
By the way, it shows that the martial artists are superior to the local people...)


- Jhoon Rhee’s documentary material
If there was Master Kwon Jae-hwa in Europe, there was Master Jhoon Rhee in the United States.
He emigrated to the United States in 1954 and is the only Korean to be selected as one of
the 200 famous immigrants along with Einstein, Kissinger, and Albright.
He has taught Taekwondo to members of the U.S. Congress for the past 40 years.

The reason the education was free is because I asked him to tell that
Taekwondo is good for health and good for life when he interviewed the media,)

Taekwondo has established itself as a world martial art.
This status of Taekwondo is the result of winning a fierce battle with oneself.
